ARTIST Marli Steyl
I like to use people I know in my paintings and I capture them in situations where I spent time with them. Swimming, hiking or chilling are my favorite subjects.
Marli Steyl portrays the every day and wants the viewer to have a sense of familiarity with her art. She approaches her paintings by matching the colour mixing to that of her subject and combining it with expressive mark-making techniques.
She explores the fragmented nature of colours and uses layers of colour to build up shape. Steyl’s preferred medium is oil and alcohol inks; her art is mainly on canvas or paper.
Most of her art explores and deconstructs her experiences and lifestyle in her home country South Africa – often depicting nature scenes inspired by hiking, or people in her community and her mundane moments.
Born in Johannesburg in 1993, Marli Steyl received her BA in Fine Artis at the University of Pretoria in 2015. After graduation, she moved to Cape Town and exhibited in various group exhibitions. A very special style and technique besides a kind personality will make sure that Steyl will pursue a good career in the fine arts.
